Not so many years ago, it was commonplace to wear brown leather accessories with day wear and black with evening wear. From an early age, that was how I expected to accessorise my kilts.

Nowadays, perhaps through the proliferation of non-tartan kilts, the 'rules' are not so easily applied since brown does not always 'go' with some colours whilst black does not always 'go' with others. I admit now to wearing brown or black, regardless of the time of day, and as governed by the kilt I am wearing.

Do not forget, this does not stop with the sporran and belt. If they are brown then you will need brown shoes/boots to wear with them. Similarly with black. I even have brown and black leather bomber jackets, so that colour co-ordination is complete.
