Thanks for the tip on the half knot deal.

My history with the Boy Scouts is about to show itself...

It's not a "half knot." It's a "single overhand knot," or the first step in tying a square knot.

If you snug the sporran into "fully drawn closed" by the drawstrings (not the flap cord) and just toss a single overhand on it, it generally won't "flop".
