They tend to go with the "Academic-Professor-Scholar" look, which is why Bow ties and tweed jackets go so well together (add a pair of corderoy pants, loafers with tassles, and a cashmere scarf and you are ready to teach "Introduction to Western Literature" at the college of your choice).
That was kind of my point. Actually bow ties and kilts have a lot in common. If you are going to wear one then "own it". It is more of the attitude of the wearer than it is what he looks like. Wear a bow tie because you want to, not because you think it is "dressy".
