			Hose tops

A few people have asked about the hose tops on the pics in the "Promised Pictures" thread (General Kilt Advice).
Here's how I did them. Use a 16 inch circular knitting needle (US size 10 or 10 1/2). For an average size leg and normal 4 oz yarn, cast on 46 stitches. Use double strands of yarn for more substance (also it helps later is you want to imitate some of the twill patterns in your kilt - use one thread in one color and one thread in a different color). Knit in a RIB stitch (knit one, purl one) all the way around. Change colors as you like. I found that 16 rows is about the right width. Bind off loosely. If it feels a little loose, take very small sewing elastic and thread it through the first row (from behind) NOT the last, bound off row.

For mine, I selected the colors, wrote down how many rows of each color and what order (knowing I would only have 16 rows to work with).

Have fun. I love them. Sometimes they are just the right little bit of extra color.
