Okay, different type of father.
I'll second Cavscout's concerns with the second idea. While I have seen fannypacks/bumbags and backpacks where the load is borne on the hips instead of the shoulders, the weight is being carried behind you.
Combining your sporran idea with a wide kilt belt/back brace might work a little better ...
