Welcome to XMarksTheScot. Be sure to give us a little introduction, too, over in the new members section.
With the fabrics available today, the athletes rarely practice or compete in wool tartan kilts. The kilts get dirty, sweaty, torn and, in some climates, just too darn hot. Look for something nice (and washable) in cotton, acrylic, polyester/cotton, polyester/viscose (aka. polyester/rayon), or even a washable wool/polyester blend. Any of these will likely be MUCH less expensive than any wool tartan, although eBay and other auction sites offer up affordable wool kilts from time to time.
Virtually every athlete I've seen compete has a tartan kilt - made from the fabrics above. (On one rare occasion, I did see a guy compete wearing a cotton kilt with a "cow pattern" print. Gotta make myself one of those some day. ) The solid color or camo casuals have not made their way into Scottish Heavy Athletic competitions generally.
Good luck with your kilt hunt, and good luck to your husband in his pursuit of glory on the field. As long as he has at least one cheering supporter, he'll have a blast.
