I built a four-yard box pleat kilt!

Here is a review I promised Gordon Kirkbright. I had intended to buy some of the damaged fabric to play around with. I ordered 2 metres to split and try a 4-yard box pleat. This was my second attempt at kilt making. (The first was also a remnant from Fraser and Kirkbright.) My intention was to hem the kilt as I knew the selvedge to be damaged. As it happens, I was lucky and the only real damage was outside of the four yard piece I wanted to use. There were also a few small oil marks, but nothing too much. The material is not perfect, but quite serviceable for trial kilt making.

I modelled the kilt on my Matt Newsome box pleat and modifed the directions in Barb's book. Here is the result. I am quite pleased with it.

So, if anyone wants to chance their luck with a damaged piece of tartan, at a knock-down price, go for it! I never imagined that I would be able to make a kilt. Follow Barb's book, be careful, patient and see what you can do!
