I've never seen any problem with the ammo boots if unused or good reproductions. It was my understanding that the soldiers themselves had them double or treble soled to stiffen them and protect the bulling on their parade boots. Granted even the unused ones take a bit of breaking in but they should be fine.

I did make the mistake of buying a pair of parade boots from a surplus store in Glasgow years ago (thinking they had just been the pair someone kept in good shape for show) and I could barely walk in them. I ended up having the resoled to be wearable.
