Todays comments and reactions
Well today is an election in Ontario, so I went out to vote with my nephew, first thing when we went into the school where the ballots were for my area, someone calls me over and asks me "So as you come from Scotland do you only wear kilts?" I told her I was born in Canada, but indeed wear kilts every day. to which she said "I've never seen a kilt like that, where did you get it?" I told her it was a Union Kilt, and I got it from Wales, next she asks "How can I tell what Clan you belong too, when you are wearing that?" My answer was "You can't you see this is a denim kilt, it's casual." "Oh it's casual" she says, "Well I like it", "Thank you I like it too" was my response.
After voting we had to go to the Home Depot to pick up some drywall, again more comments, compliments, and questions about my nationality. Once we got home with our drywall, there were two construction workers were outside doing some work one comes over and says "You must be Scottish." I say no but both parents are so he asks "Do you know why a Scotsman wears a kilt?" and both he and I answer at the same time "Because the sound of a zipper makes sheep nervous." this really got my nephew laughing. I then commented to the construction worker if you can't laugh at yourself who can you laugh at.
All in all its been a normal day kilted, mostly compliments, some stares and a few laughs, but I will say that none of those people would have talked to me at all had I been wearing jeans. I have found that recently these are the type of interactions I have with people, the other day when walking the dog a woman asked me "What kind of dog is that?" I told her she's a husky, and was then informed that she really wanted to look at my kilt. Fine, go ahead look at it all you want. I told her.
For the most part the negative comments have fallen off and what is left are conversations like these. I think it has to do with my comfort level with wearing the kilt.
I'm not really sure where I am going with this, I suppose I just wanted to show others that if they go out and do normal things kilted they won't necessarily be bombarded with negative comments. Just to remember to take each individual experience as they come and for their own merit.
