It would also help balance the weight,

I was just thinking the same thing this weekend. I was wearing my kilt at my sons college parents day. We sat down on some low and deep (artsy) couch in the art building and my wife came over and said I was exposing myself. Needless to say the sporran was low and the material was pushed all the way it would go but because of the couch it didn't quite cover. I have not had the problem with a utilikilt but the pleats in the wool are too far away.
