Just a little history note on the tartan: What has become accepted as the US Navy tartan is the US Navy Edzell Tartan. It was unveiled at the 25th Anniversary Celebration of the US Naval Security Group Activity, RAF Edzell's establishment on July 6th 1985 (I was stationed there from 1978-1981). In addition to the NSG and the Marine Support Battion, there were small Air Force and Army Intel detachments on board. The dark blue was chosen to represent the Navy, light blue for the Air Force, red stripes for the Marine Corps and Army, and white for the waves of the ocean.
NSGA, RAF Edzell closed in September of 1997 after a presence of 37 years. Here is a link to an article in the Dundee Courier on the base closure:
