The Kirk'n is an American custom, most Scots are not familiar with the Kirk'n. The service is to celebrate and remember the heritage and evolution of the Presbyterian Church in this country from the Church of Scotland.

As an aside, I recall a couple years back I was unable to wear my kilt (near wardrobe malfunction ) & so I attended the kirkin' in street clothes with my tartan billed Mackay ball cap. My friend who was performing the service made a comment to "take hold of your tartan," (pause...& he looks at me) "or your ball cap".
