As I remember the chain is for more evening or formal wear, while the leather is more of a daywear style. That also seems to go for the sporran its self; leather for casual and the fur for more dress up. Knowing I'm going to more pub nights than Burns nights I went with the leather styles. I've also hear that the chain can begin to wear the fabric at some point. Then again wear what you like and what works for you.
