Before you do that, it is best to moisten the leather, I use a mix of water and about 10%-15% rubbing alcohol to aid adsorption. It will cause the leather to take a "set" faster. As for the rough flesh side of the sporran strap, this can be burnished off with some sort of abrasive. Check with a harness & tack shop (Western), they will know what is best for that job.
