American square dancing was very popular here in the United Kingdom back around 1950, after our then Princess Elizabeth (now HM The Queen) toured North America and was photographed enjoying a country square dance with Prince Philip. Like many young people at that time, I joined a local dance club but, after a few years, folks lost interest and mostly returned to ballroom dancing causing the square dance clubs to close. Such a shame. Many of the movements, but definitely not the footwork(!) is akin to those in Scottish Country Dancing. I dare say American square dance is still danced here, but it is not popular.
