As to the "modesty" thing--my pouch sporran (rob roy) does indeed fall right in the middle and that can be helpful as I sometimes wear a kilt while giving talks in people's homes, coffee shops, etc. and flashing the audience is not helpful. My semi-dress and SWK nylon sporrans are wider, stiffer, and they sit atop the legs--so no help there.
That being said...Cavebear58's photo collage changed my mind on this issue. I was going with the "kilts don't look right sans sporran" sentiments, but...I don't think the enemy were sitting in their trench, watching those Black Watch boys come screaming with their bayonets, and thinking "Those Scots don't look masculine without their sporrans, do they?" All the proud men in uniform exemplify true kilted attitude--so now I have to say kilts without sporrans look fine.
