It really does make a difference what the demographics of your area are, although educational level seems to be even more important. The only times someone's ever tried to mock me resulted in them getting shushed by their friends who said things along the lines of "It's a kilt, stupid! It's cool!" (Although I want to reply "No it's not! I'm fairly toasty here!")
I have, however, gotten some odd stares, especially in the local store where I buy polymer, wood, steel, copper, and lead products.
