In that case I'd say a Grey Tweed Braemar would be the way to go. Something like this:

All you really need to turn it up a notch in formality is change the sporran.

I picked this jacket and waistcoat up at my local tartan shop, they are ex-rentals so that helped, the jacket had never been worn, and the waistcoat was new. It has proven to be the most versatile jacket in my wardrobe and a great alternative to a suit. I've worn it at everything from a wedding to a funeral.
