It is all to do with the height of the seat ,position of the seat(anybody who knows Landrovers will know there is little or no adjustment) and the door catch. The kilt easily(very easily!) gets trapped in the door catch when closing the door. At best you get an oily mark, at worst(usually) you get the oily mark and a hole in the kilt.
The Defenders came with fold down steps as an option, no?
