George Leslie Mackay and Family, late 1890s
Visiting my grandparents in the Bay Area, I found a copy of the May 1993 issue of the Free China Review containing this photograph. Left to right: George Leslie Mackay 偕叡理 (Jie Ruili), son George William 偕叡廉 (Jie Ruilian), daughter Bella 偕以利 (Jie Yili), daughter Mary 偕瑪蓮 (Jie Malian), and wife Minnie 張聰明 (Zhang Congming). [Notes: I may have switched the daughters. Chinese names are Romanized in the Mandarin dialect in Hanyu pinyin, because that's what I know. Nevertheless, Mackay's family would have spoken the Taiwanese/Southern Fujianese dialect.]
George Leslie Mackay was a Presbyterian missionary to Taiwan/Formosa, born of Scottish immigrant parents in Canada.
