I'd say your sampling is fairly accurate basing that on the general "feel" I get from what I read and post.
To add examples to your survey, I have one camo kilt, soon-to-be two tartan kilts and one Saffron hidden tartan. Odds are I won't be buying another "contemporary" kilt until the camo one wears out and seeing as I will likely wear my wool kilts when going out-and-about that means I will focus more on the accessories that go with those.
It doesn't say that I don't like contemporary kilts as much, it just means I have a contemporary kilt that fills that niche very well. I wear it more than any of my others.
Another thing that has changed for me, is that the value I place on "quality" products has increased. I eased into kilts on a shoe-string budget, getting what I could with what I had. As time went on though, I wanted to "upgrade" some of my entry level items to more refined and well-crafted items. Of my entry level items, I still value my military "safety pin" kilt pin and the stillwater standard kilt. They serve well in many situations.
