5 Modern kilts looks from Panache

CMcG asked that I take a look and contribute to his thread.

Reading through the responses and looking at the photos posted I have to note that a good number of the outfits shared really don’t seem to be very “modern”. I think there is a difference between traditional looking kilts that are mass produced, machine sewn, and/or of synthetic materials and a true “Modern/Contemporary” kilt. These traditional looking kilts follow the same fashion guidelines as a hand sewn wool tartan one. The same goes for solid color traditional looking kilts (which are actually more traditional than tartan ones!)

As for true modern kilts (like Union kilts, Utilikilts, R-Kilts, Amerikilts, etc) …

#13 Do Modern Kilts follow the same rules as Traditional Highland Attire?

No. Modern kilts (such as Utilikilts, R Kilts, etc.) are their own thing. One can certainly take inspiration from traditional highland attire but following it too closely doesn’t really work and creates an incongruous look with a modern kilt. If you really want to wear Argyll jackets, flashes, fancy sporrans, etc. then please stick to traditional looking kilts. Being such a new fashion there really aren't any set rules for modern kilts but one should try to come up with an entire outfit where all elements all work together.

Now at the conclusion of our thread “ 1 Kilt 10 Looks : A Visual Guide to Formality in Highland Attire”

    http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/f...-attire-48691/

Glen and I stated regarding modern kilts

“…We find that there are some solid principles of traditional highland dress that can be applied to them, but as a current fashion there really aren't any set rules for dressing up or down a modern kilt. With no disrespect intended toward modern / contemporary kilts (we both each own at least one) we also feel that most modern / contemporary styled kilts lack the incredible versatility of the traditional kilt…”

With this in mind I wondered how far could you take a modern kilt in terms of formality. Taking a careful look at both at my old photos and my wardrobe I tried to see how much I could dress up in a modern kilt. I deliberately tried to avoid too much reference to highland attire and my only requirement was that the photos would have to be an outfit I would wear out and about today.

For the record, IMHO a sweater vest, dress shirt, tie, and semi dress shoes are as formal as I could successfully take any of my modern kilts. I think the most successful of these outfits is the maroon one that takes a modern kilt and goes with a Hawaiian/sarong inspiration instead of a Highland one. Then again I may be partial to it because it is so comfortable...

    ...and matches my pipe!

    Cheers
