Ciao, Paolo!
My father was in Rome the day the Allies entered the city in 1944. There were crowds and crowds of Italian folk cheering the Allied troops, and some of them were handing out bottles of chianti.
The South Africans went into the front lines at Monte Cassino, and were at that stage part of the British Eighth Army. They were transferred to the US Fifth Army because the Free French and Free Poles had been sent to fight in France.
And it was the Fifth Army that entered Rome.
Regards,
Mike
