Yes, bedbugs are horrible, and a real challenge to get rid of -- thirty years ago when travelling I had several encounters with the nasty critters. A combination of heat and freezing seemed to be one way to get them out of clothing. That combined with (unfortunately) throwing some clothing out -- not recommended in this case for kilts!
As for furniture and rugs -- there are some new chemicals on the market, but you don't really want DDT used again. It had a horrible impact, particularly birds, and its banning was a good thing.
