Generally, lad, ya' gets what ya' pays for.
I would note, however, that some of the less expensive (and I do NOT say cheaper!) kilts are very, very appropriate for certain uses. I'm about to acquire a poly-viscose with less yardage, to be used in situations where I wouldn't want to snag or stain my higher quality 9 yard wool kilt.
I don't see it as a "lesser" kilt, but rather as a better choice for "banging about" because it is somewhat more resistant to some kinds of damage. I've seen the samples, and frankly they look darned good... just... different.
