I agree with Scott. And when I mentioned a re-enactor's bonnet, I am talking about such bonnets as the Kilmarnock, the old Highland 'broad bonnet', etc - not bonnets that basically are, or have the look of the modern Balmoral/Glengarry. I think yours looks great, I love the brown colour with the black of the Hanoverian cockade!

Thanks so much, to both you and MoR, for weighing in! That was really a question that I've been wondering about for quite some time, but for whatever reason, I've not really asked yet. Thanks also for the props on color and soforth. As it were, this is my own favorite bonnet color.

I must say that I'm really quite relieved to hear your thoughts on the matter... if Jock were to comment as well, I'd have the Traditional Trifecta.

But yes- This just goes to show what a difference one's choice of bonnet adornment makes, as the only real difference between this bonnet and many later 18th century ones is the badge and cockade (and likely the color, of course). So, to the OP, whatever bonnet you choose- pick what you wear upon it carefully.

Would a square of appropriate tartan not be a good alternative to a cockade? I believe I've seen soldiers' tams similarly fitted. How would one go about preparing this? How large should the piece be?

That's certainly a look that a lot of folks enjoy, and if you're one of them, then it's a good look for you! One thought though- You may find that the tartan alone does not stiffen the bonnet enough to hold up a crest badge. One thing you might do is back the piece of tartan with a stiff piece of gros grain ribbon, before applying it to the hat. About 2.5 inches by 3 inches should be a fairly normal size, I think.
