" An enquiring email to Stewart at Rendall's of Edinburgh wouldn't hurt. Excellent quality and exceptional value, have a look at his testimonials.

I can vouch for the quality of Stewart kilts, nothing was to much trouble and when the kilt arrived it was a perfect fit and of top quality. Just my un reserved reccomendation

Thanks for all your good advice. I have been intouch with Stewart, I am having trouble accessing Chisholms website they appear to be working on it, so I haven't been able to get any info from them.

I'm sure this will start a storm from the traditionalists. I own Stillwater "Standard" kilt. It currently costs $80 US. I find it to be very well made for how often I wear it (about 6 times a year). I have been comfortable in it from 90 deg F down to about -9 deg F.

They make a "heavy weight" wool for $120-140 but it only comes in 5 patterns, three of which are solids.

They have always been a great company to deal with. And they have blazing fast shipping.

Good luck finding a kilt that meets your needs.

Slightly off Kilt purchasing and more to plans for your forthcoming visit.

If you are going to be in the Southern end of Scotland (Dumfries and Galloway) and you're thinking of stopping off in the town of Dumfries to investigate the home of the Great Bard, Robert Burns, might I suggest you book yourselves into here for a night or two: Ferintosh Guest House There's also some good reviews on Trip Advisor.co.uk (google's your friend)

Robertson and Emma run a very clean and Kilt friendly guest house which provides a full breakfast and there is always a dram of Single Malt in your room. It's also just over the road from the Station and a ten minute stroll into the centre of town.

As a point of interest, Robertson and Emma also host the infamous Ferintosh Burns Suppers and the preceding kilted pub crawl which draw people from as far afield as Australia, Canada and the US, Ireland, Norway, Spain, Turkey and more. They even on occasion have English people turn up.

Robertson is also a member here (advance search for threads by "Pour1Malt") and has entertained both Steve the Forum Owner and Hamish the Kilted Legend! You'd be in exalted company once a member of the "I've Stayed at Ferintosh" Club. (I don't think there's a T-Shirt)

The Burns Suppers unfortunately, are a start of the year event so you've missed 'em but there's nothing to stop you enjoying their wonderful hospitality on your visit. A more charming couple you couldn't want to meet.

If you were considering going there by train, it's a two hour journey from Edinburgh with a change at Carlisle in Englandshire. As I said, the Guest House is directly opposite Dumfries Station Entrance on Lover's Walk (see google maps)

I urge you to try it out. My wife and I have been to Ferintosh quite a few times now and had a blast on each and every occasion. I highly recommend it.

Either way, I hope you have a fantastic time, where ever you happen to go. Don't forget the pictures.

As the owner of 2 Stillwater Standards, and a handful of other kilts... you are seriously comparing apples to oranges as far as the weight, durability, and quality. I love Stillwater kilts for their price point and Jerry's shipping speed is awesome, but acrylic, machine-sewn, Pakistani kilts aren't really what the OP is looking for, I venture.
Have fun and throw far. In that order, too. - o1d_dude

First of all thank-you English bloke for your recomandations and thank-you to pour1malt for your kind invitation. The wife and I will be in the area but I am not sure if we will have time to visit but we will certainly keep it in mind.
Secondly I am deffinately looking for a made to measure kilt and I am considering a custom weave of dc Dalgleish MacDonald of Glencoe heavy weight tartan. Does anyone have a kilt in this tartan or actually seen it in the flesh so to speak, it looks great but does it look like it does on the monitor?
