    RAGBRAI has kilties

For those who are not bicyclists, an/or don't live in Iowa, this week is RAGBRAI (Register's Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa). It begins on the west side of the state, with participants dipping their rear wheels in the Missouri river (not this year, due to flooding. One of the scout troops out that way actually trucked Missouri river water to the start site for the symbolic dip). It then winds it's way east through mostly small town rural Iowa, and ends with everyone dipping their front wheel in the Mississippi river at the east side. Today the passed through the little town of Mitchellville, where I and many others were set up to sell breakfast burritos as a fund-raiser for our school band program. I go just about everywhere kilted all the time unless there is a good reason not to. Had my picture taken several times, and had a good deal of fun talking to folks whilst cooking 75 pounds of potatoes. To my surprise, I was not the only kilt in sight today. There were at least three intrepid souls pedaling their way across my state and doing so in a kilt. Fun day, though tiring, I lit the griddle at 5 AM and cooked for four hours straight, all the while in my four yard box pleated kilt made of 18 oz. Leslie tartan (MoD surplus cloth). It was a fine day, and the kids pep band played awesomely for the whole time. A good time for a good cause.

Are you going to the end of RAGBRAI in Davenport? I'm originally from D-Port and I'm going back to run in the Bix7 on the 30th. Debating whether or not to kilt...packing it up for airline travel is my biggest concern.

No I was only attending today, I cooked 72 lbs. of potatoes this morning.

No photos, it didn't happen. You're right, those twenty thousand people on bikes were all a figment of my imagination. I don't do photos. I have carried cameras all over the country and to several others, and never take pictures. I stopped pretending to. I am somehow too busy living life to be concerned about making pictures of it.

I'll vouch for you, Howard -- my cousins have ridden RAGBRAI several times.

I will vouch for you too. We had a small problem a few years ago when RAGBRI went through the small town my in-laws lived in. The ride went through right between the church and cemetary where my FIL's funeral was being held the same day. The good thing is that everyone was through before the start.

My son-in-law's mother is on that ride this year and has been for several years.
