I've told you a million times John, don't exaggerate!
Hahaha, quite! That and the Macpherson red ancient in Strome. I too am very fond of the Strome variant, however, I have plans to begin a series of kilts done in tartan from Dalgliesh - I am very attracted to Wilson's colours for the Macpherson tartan, as well as the rare, Macpherson of Cluny tartan. A kilt made of Dalgliesh produced tartan is at the top of my "to purchase" list as we speak. I currently own 4 (Macpherson tartan) kilts in Strome, and though I adore them all, I am ready to move on to Dalgliesh!
P.S. - John, I haven't forgetten about the Macpherson "hunting" tartan thread...sorry mate, had to take a trip up to Canada, will get on that thread straight away...gotta upload more photos!
Yours aye,

Don't get me wrong. Marton Mills, gorgeous. Dalgliesh, gorgeouser. Strome, gorgeousest... Matter of preference obviously.

John,
Do you really prefer the new bulky tuck-in selvedge of Lochcarron to Dalgliesh's?

errr... no.
My Dalgliesh is wonderful and the selvedge is the best of all probably.
I just love Strome. It's a fabulous kilting cloth.
Might just be a Levi / Wrangler, Roller / Bentley thing, who knows... each to their own I guess...

I prefer working with Dalgliesh custom tartan over anything else. It is beautiful stuff, the hand is fabulous, and the selvedge is to die for. Nothing better, in my estimation!
But, it is so interesting - what the tartan feels like depends on what the dominant color is. I am working right now with two Dalgliesh custom weaves - Modern Allen and USAF Reserve Pipe Band. And they feel very different. Maybe someone (Matt?) knows more about this than I do, but I assume that some colors need to be scoured more than others before dyeing, giving them a different feel. I've found the same thing with various colors of Icelandic yarn.

Now that suprises me somewhat... Since i saw a post of yours on a different forum... Just looking at the pics you posted, the dcd looked finer... I like my strome... So I was leaning towards what i know... Albeit double width rather than single...
Does the dcd feel lighter? I dont really see the difference in selvedge being a decider one way or the other.

Ah, but it is. The tartan sett of the tucked selvedge has to be arranged so that it aligns in such a way to mask the fact that the colours look differently at the very edge than throughout the rest of the cloth. It is, as mentioned earlier, thicker as well.
I would repeat that one should consider all factors, colour, hand, thread count, etc. including the selvedge to make one's consideration. I would, at this point, give Lochcarron the edge (<-pun) only in the Modern colours department in more circumstances. Dalgleish's Ancient colours are excellent and I also like Dalgleish's Reproduction colours better than Lochcarron's Weathered. I prefer Dalgleish's cloth for texture and edge hands down.
