Preparing to make first traditional kilt

Hello all. After making two X-kilts and having so much fun, I bought Barb T's book and want to try making my first traditional kilt. I have a few questions. I like the Young tartan kilt pleated to the stripe, that Barb posted a picture of. I want to make a kilt that has the same type of "flash of color" effect and will probable use the Young modern tartan since I have a good example of how to achieve this effect. If anyone could give me any more specific tartans that I might be able to use I would appreciate it. Secondly, I want to use wool for this kilt and was wondering if there were any sources in the U.S. where I could purchase it. If not, I will order it directly from one of the Scottish mills, and would like to know the best way to avoid UPS and FEDEX excessive custom broker fees. If anyone has ordered tartan fabric from across the pond, what were your experiences like? Basically what are my best options for getting quality fabric at the best total costs? Thank you all in advance. I am planning this as a winter project.

I'm not sure what is the best but you might want to try Lochcarron. They bulk ship to the US and then distribute to customers. Usually takes a week or two. Good luck on your new adventure.

I've checked with Lochcarron myself, and there's no savings over going to USA Kilts or the Scottish Tartans Museum Giftshop. It appears that the mark-up on tartan yardage (retail) is fairly standard; I would also suspect that such an expensive material wouldn't have much margin when you're talking about small amounts. It's likely that the real savings for commercial kiltmakers comes when they order enough tartan material to make hundreds of kilts a year.

Also, the two retail suppliers I mentioned, just as examples, give additional value-added service, such as an excellent selection of tartan from more than one mill, a fast, knowledgable response to customer inquiries, and other other little extras.

I think Marton Mills has the most affordable tartan cloth on the planet. Their Jura range is heavyweight. It's an excellent option to start out. You should get material for an 8 yarder for about $100 http://www.martonmills.com/range//list/51
