I don't know how much Ron knows of traditional Northwest coast dress. I describe it as Kilt, Cape, and Cap. I have noticed my modern native friends tend toward knee length apparel over full trousers. A brown utility kilt even mimiks the traditional colour of cedar bark fabric, as the common t-shirt colours mimic those of a traditional Button Robe. Interesting to ponder the connexions but I'll stop now before I spin too far on a tangent.

Raised in Portland, Oregon so yes, familiar with NW Tribes dress.

Today at the conference I got a high five from a Native guy as we passed in the hotel hallway and he said, "Hey Scottish Brother!"

I was having lunch near the Nipmuc tribe in Massachusetts. A few natives sat at the table next to us and kept looking over at me. I wasn't kilted so I didn't know what the deal was. Maybe they noticed the tartan cloth tied around my wrist and the flat cap I thought. As I was leaving I introduced myself and told them I was Crow and Blackfoot. One said I have seen you playing bagpipes with a band. I confirmed his comment and he smiled and said so what other tribes are you from? We talked and laughed for a few minutes. It was fun.

This morning THREE lovely ladies sort of corraled me and started asking questions about the kilt. Serious questions. And they expressed admiration that I was kilted and how much sense that made. They wanted to feel the PV material. Took them a while to get around "the question." and I told them the range of responses we have to choose from.

Never would have happened if I was wearing jeans like most every other man there. Never....God I love kilts!

    Gordon,
Hopefully, you will be better received than I. Once, in a meeting with the Taos Pueblo council, we were discussing their love for their ancestral lands. I related a personal feeling of loss for Scotland and its mountains since my forefathers were exiled at the end of the '45. They looked at me with some disdain and were mildly insulted that I would try to draw a parallel between their history and mine! To be fair, we were opening what was known to be a fairly controversial meeting and I was trying to find some common ground to start. Even though Taos Pueblo is well-known for their usually polite nature, they were having none of my drivel!

I have been relatively closely associated with the folks at Taos Pueblo for the past 15 years, both as an employee, contractor, employer, and friend.
I have been kilted for the past 18 months, and have yet to find the proper opportunity to broach the subject with anyone from the Pueblo. Even if I were to get a positive response from one member, my guess is that there is a 50/50 chance that I might get a negative response from the next tribal member that I spoke with.
This is not in any way meant to be negative, it is just to say that the Native People of North America are certainly not homogenous.
