This is why I love you guys; so resourceful!

I had noticed the familiarity of some of their pictures. That (and the price) is why I sought the opinions here. The carrot sure looks tasty though...

I think I shall request more pictures of their products, like rear and alternate views of the Sherrifmuir, and images of the vest without jacket. See if they can satisfactorily provide these images and go from there.

As for the Stewart Tartan Pipes and Drums of San Fransisco, I suppose it would be wise to contact them regarding their relationship with Imp Highland Supplies.

If everything else checks out fine, I think I may order an item and just be sure to pay with PayPal. At least then I would have the comfort of knowing PayPal will do everything they can to help if it gets messy.
    Until then, more investigation!

That sounds very wise. I have seen some Prince Charlies from Pakistan advertised as having a false vest front stitched inside the jacket rather than being a separate item

Watch out also for import duties. Here in the UK that could add a considerable amount to the total cost of purchase as we get import duty and sales tax (VAT) added plus, sometimes, a carrier's handling charge

According to Paul Olson, Drum Major of the Stewart Tartan Pipes and Drums of San Fransisco, they deal with J. Higgins for their kilt wear.

Just remember, there's a time limit for PayPal. I think it's 45 days, but make sure you kow how long PayPal will cover you.

Had look at a few of their items that match stuff I'm planning to buy and its interesting.
They do the Argyll jacket for £80, but for £80 Geoffrey also include carrier, sgian dubh, choice of sporran, chains and Saltire kilt pin.
Prince Charlie jacket, £85, but for £90 Geoffrey also include carrier, sgian dubh, choice of sporran and chains and Saltire kilt pin.
So it shows its worth shopping around a bit to get the best price.
As regards duty etc., when I got my brogues from Geoffrey, which were superb quality, I didn’t have to pay anything extra.

I agree with the Laird. Geoffrey is an honest company with good prices.

In my experience both branches are good.

I really hate the furry 'trible' type sporrans and when I asked if they'd let me change the sporran that comes with their sets (SP2) for something in goat skin (SP52), they were only too happy to oblige.

Now I just need to finish saving up...

Many pipe bands in this area, as well as myself, also use J. Higgins. I've never had a problem with anything I've purchased from them.

A very good point about PayPal. I would certainly hope that any goods would arrive within that 45 day window. If not, then the supplier isn't keeping up his end is he?

I have dealt with JHiggins as well, and found them to be satisfactory . I only wish they had the Sherrifmuir!

And to that end, I did some more searching... and found the same picture of the Sherrifmuir in question on another site- one which we have been advised to steer clear of as well. Interesting that they are just about the same price from both suppliers.

Paul was somewhat surprised when he saw the picture and wondered where they'd got it. In fact, here is his response after seeing the site:

Yes, that is our band, I will be curious where they got the photo. This is a very small parade in a very small town in California!

    Paul

What I would take from this is that they did not have permission to use that photo and, as such, I would be wary of any business dealings with them. That being said, there may well be cultural differences that allow them to feel free to use any photos they may find without the stigma that we would attach to it. It may be that they are a very honest company who cannot understand why people of this culture would attach any meaning at all to them using a photo they found on the internet. I really don't know.
