Er, with the greatest of respect, that is not quite what I said.
I hope you don't mind me pointing out that mixing hues, setts, and various tartans within a Clan is perfectly acceptable and has been done for years up here. A "Lairds " day plaid is often a different sett and hue and it is quite often a completly different tartan------within the SAME Clan---- to the kilt. Also, the Atholl Highlanders are more than happy to parade with three(at least) different hues of the Murray tartan. To name two perfectly accaptable examples.

Charcoal colored flashes would work well. If you wanted a bit more color, red or claret (for a more subdued red) are always good choices.
I also think lovat blue hose look great with most weathered tartans.

If wanting a more subdued appearance while wearing weathered tartans, I sometimes go with Bison or Dark Natural hose (linked below), paired with Claret or Ancient Blue flashes.

I would caution against wearing a tan/brown shirt with them though, as it gives an overall dull appearance rather than just subdued.
Best of luck!

No, don't mind at all but I but I still don't like to mix any tartan as a general rule. To me it looks slightly unco-ordinated even though it is acceptable

That's the thing though, Highland wear, the kilt and its attire, almost goes out of its way not to co-ordinate things, or at the very best, not to give it too much thought.

I know, but it's one of my failings

Re: What colour hose and flashes would work best?
I see what your saying Jock and davidg,
By way of example, If I were wearing a Stewart black kilt, and Stewart hunting flashes that would be ok (i.e. same clan). Or Differing sett sized of the same clan tartan. However, If I were wearing a stewart black kilt and say MacDonald flashes, that's not seen as acceptable. Correct?
I guess, like Jock pointed out, if your wearing your clan tartan kilt (MacDonald) and your district tartan flashes (Nfld. Provincial), that's more of a grey area, and ok.
To split hairs even further, how about if you wore a MacDonald kilt (his Father's side) and MacLeod flashes (Mother's side)? Would the family affinity supersede the mixing of clan tartan's there?
Just trying to work out the do's and don'ts =)
I'm with Jock though, I tend to wear solid flashes. Particularly red. But if I do wear Tartan flashes, it's always the matching tartan.

Yes you are getting the hang of it, but it really is not done to wear different Clan tartans. Using your two Clans as an example, there are some MacLeods and some MacDonalds that may not be too happy with your mixture, MacDonalds and Campbells would be another potential flash-point and the whole Clan and inter-Clan history is littered with these "Mines". In passing, it is usual to wear your father's tartan.
Now don't get me wrong these inter-clan feuds are over and done with and have been for a couple of centuries, but it is one of those social niceties that we observe to avoid upset in the "beer tent".
