String Cheese is a good band too!
I guess I should tell my story now. You would think the admin would have by now.
I am 25 years old. When I was in second grade I remember watching a film in school about the Edinburgh Tattoo. I saw the guys in the pipe band and something welled up inside of me. I went straight home that day and ran up to my moms closet. I knew she kept a trunk for of fabric there b/c she used to custom make clothes. I found some plaid fabric and wrapped it around my waist and ran downstairs to show my mom. Tears welled up in her eyes b/c she knew I had the passion for my Scottish heritage and wasnt even old enough to understand it.
So thats how it started. I was into my heritage. I kept up with all things Scottish through out the years but at the time, as many have stated, kilts were so exppensive.
When I was in college we had an event called Funk Formal. I said that I wanted to wear a kilt but I had no way to buy one. I went to Wal-Mart and found some fabric and came home to try and make one. It was a disaster and I threw it out. I figured I would rather go in pants than a messed up kilt.
I swore though that at my next formal event I would have a kilt. It just so happened that the girl I took to the Funk Formal was the girl I asked to marry me the next year. I went straight to Everything Scottish in Linville NC and got measured. 6 weeks later my Hannay Trad arrived!
I got married in June of that year.

A great story Hank and wonderful photos.
I was not able to talk my wife into a Kilted Wedding.
I think if I had to do it all over again I would have pushed a
little harder. I think it worked out for the best though.

p.s. I will mail your cd out Friday. I couldn’t get the music

Introduction to Kilts
I think the first time I came in contact with someone wearing a kilt was when I was about 8 years old. It was at my aunt’s wedding reception. There was a family there, who were friends of my aunt and their son (who was about my age) was wearing a kilt. I was fascinated by his kilt and I remember asking him all about it. It seems that the family were Scottish.
I didn’t get the chance to wear a kilt myself until about twenty odd years ago when I was best man at a Scottish wedding, and I wore a hired kilt outfit for the occasion. Although I liked the kilt a lot, I was not so keen on the rest of the outfit (I never have been one for formal wear), and as I thought at the time that one had to wear the whole outfit or not at all, I didn’t give it much more thought.
About three years ago I was doing some walking in the Scottish Highlands and stopped at a good viewpoint for a sandwich and a drink of water. Two guys, who were also out hill walking, approached and I noticed that they were both kilted in a casual hill walking style. They also stopped for a bite to eat, and we got talking. The conversation quickly got round to their kilts, and I expressed my surprise that they were hill walking in kilts, as I thought that kilts were only for formal wear. They told me that kilts were the most comfortable things to wear for such activities, and from that time on, I decided that I must get a kilt.
I looked up my family tartan, but decided that I didn’t like it. It was far too garish for my liking. However, I then discovered that my own English county of origin had two district tartans of its own, which I liked, so I had a kilt made in one of these. I mainly (but not exclusively) wear it for hill walking.

My first time......
I was looking for some sort of hobby or something to do. My wife grew up dancing and her father piped, so it was a family affair. I am not musically inclined so i found HEAVY EVENTS and I have been hooked ever since. This is my second year of competing. I recieved my games kilt from sport kilt last year and I love it. I now look for reasons to wear it out.
anyway that's my story

Chris, I've been the same - 'looking for reasons to wear a kilt', as I get more addicted I find that just going out is reason enough, and now even just getting out of bed is reason enough.
Actually, I sleep in an Indian lungi so I am unbifurcated even when asleep I have it bad
Rob, I'm with you as far as casual kilts go, some of the very formal wear does nothing for me, it's just not me.
I can't even wear my new balmoral, it's just too formal for me, let alone Prince Charlie jackets.
Just a kilt and a woolie, that's me!

Hi Chris and welcome to the board. I just love watching the 'heavies' in the traditional type games events. Any pics of you with cabers and hammers?
Like many here, simply getting out and about in my kilt is enough, though I tend not to at home. There is a healthy quorum of folk in Ontario so you already have a number of soul mates.
Keep visiting.

first kilt experience
My first experience of kilt-wearing came when I played a scotsman in a farcical comedy called 'Who goes Bare?' That was back in 1986.
I enjoyed the feeling of the garment, the freedom, and the loved the way it moved.
I liked it so much, I hired one to give 'moral support' to a scottish friend who was nervous about wearing his at a new year's eve party.
I now have kilts of my own and wear whenever possible.
