St. Ninian tartan on display in Charlotte

This past weekend the Roman Catholic Diocese of Charlotte held its annual Eucharistic Congress at the Charlotte Convention Center.

This year, the Campus Ministry office for the Diocese held a fundraiser by taking out vending space and selling a number of items that we had sent to us on consignment from various different places. These items included various Catholic jewelry, t-shirts, and a variety of items in the St. Ninian tartan, designed for the Papal visit to Scotland last September.

Here are some shots of the display.

Of course I was there in my St. Ninian tartan kilt. Here I am with three of my young ladies who are students at Western Carolina University.

It was a fairly successful fundraiser and lots of people came by to ask about the tartan. A fair number remembered reading about it from last year, and we sold quite a few scarves and other accessories.

It was interesting for me to display tartan items at a non-Scottish event. I'm used to every other person asking "What's my tartan" but not so this event. People were very interested in the history of the St. Ninian tartan and the design rationale.

In any case, it was a good time. I was wearing not only my St. Ninian tartan kilt, but my new linen kilt jacket, hose hand knit by my wife, and a 50+ year old regimental sporran I recently swiped off of Ebay. :-) My tie is a club tie from the St. Andrews Society of SC, given to me when I was invited to one of their meetings as a guest speaker.

Nice display, Matt. And the St Andrew’s Society tie goes extraordinarily well with the tartan.
