    floor length womens kilts

I only have one kilt and it's a standard above the knee womens kilt but I can't wear that outside. I wanted to find a floor length kilt that isn't too old lady looking and that is in a pretty basic tartan like the Honour of Scotland. Any ideas on ways to put that together or where to find one that isn't going to cost me an arm and a leg?

Id get Walker tartan but I don't really feel right wearing Walker tartan if I know it's not really my clan tartan. That's why I'd rather go for a more generic one. Also, Walker tartan costs a shiny penny. Too shinny.

    Hi Meghan
I am sure that there are many tailors on here who would be delighted to make you a "long skirt" I hesitate to use the word kilt as that term generally refers to a mans garment and that is worn at mid Knee length give or take an inch.
There are lots of district tartans available and I am sure that learned xmarkers will point you in the right direction but why not go for the Walker Tartan. Many of us wear Kilts to which we only have the slightest tenuous connection. I myself lust after a Taylor tartan which is not my surname but my mothers maiden name. I dont have a direct clan connection on my fathers side, so grasping at straws I would chose to wear a tartan associated with my mother.
Good luck in your search and a belated welcome to the forum from across the pond.
    Kind regards
    Simon

Thank you for such a kind response! And I actually didn't know that "kilt" was a term used for the mans garment. Thank you for letting me know

I guess I want to learn a little more about my family in Scotland before going after a specific clans tartan since I have heard that the Walkers have teamed up with other clans and a few other theories. Id like to learn more before choosing one A district tartan would be a great idea, though!

And do you guys think that floor length tartan skirts are too old lady looking? I want to make it tasteful and feminine but I need to work with what I can wear. Shorter skirts are fine for inside but I would need floorlength for outdoors or events.

There are quite a few skirts shown in other threads, I'll try to dig up some links later today. Here's a fabulous one that I may take a fling at one of these days. . .

    Meghan
There is a lady on here called Cynthia, she is an excellent seamstress who makes fantastic antique costumes, I am sure if you PM her she will give you some excellent advice. I must admit I am not familiar with N American district tartans but someone like Matt Newsome could perhaps advise, if Matt doesnt know then no-one does.
And remember the golden rule, we need pictures when you have it made, If we dont get any pictures then it didnt happen. :-)

    kind regards

Meghan, floor length is "classy", not "old lady".

Chicks dig guys in kilts... well, guys dig chicks in tartan, too!

Also check post #19 in this thread. I've made a test version in madras similar to styles 5 and 6, next step is cutting into some real tartan for it.

    Re: floor length womens kilts

Like any other item of clothing a full length kilted skirt (sometimes called a hostess skirt) can look very flattering on young women. But also like any other item of clothing it can sometimes not

Have a look at http://www.scotweb.co.uk/products/hostess-skirt/ and you will see an example of a quite flattering skirt worn by a young woman and, in my experience, it is the short kilted skirt that can make a woman look old and frumpy, not the full length ones

If this style does not suit, why not look at a silk tartan dress. They come in many styles that are very youthful looking

    Re: floor length womens kilts

you all are so helpful! And im flattered that it's not considered old lady, especially since im in my 20s. I love floor length skirts especially with a nice fitted plain top in order to accent the long skirt. I really need something to wear to stuff.

hell, I need to find "stuff" that I can even wear it to...
