Not unless they've been living under a rock or in a dark cave in the far east. I think most people know that a man in a "plaid skirt" is definitely wearing a kilt Braveheart was pretty popular.

They're probably just trying to sound like jerks. For some reason some guys like to think that kilts are girly. I, honestly, think kilts are totally masculine. Those guys are just jealous that their legs arent hairy enough for a real mans kilt

Ok... I REALLY laughed when I reed this...

Sometimes I do wonder if a person doesn't recognize what it is, but generally I wonder more if they think it is the first time I've heard that...

Mark Twain said it best, though I try to be patient and explain it is a kilt and not a skirt.

"It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt."

"Greater understanding properly leads to an increasing sense of responsibility, and not to arrogance."

    Re: Nice Skirt

One would think everyone would know what a kilt is especially when it is a traditional tartan with Sporran arrangement. It would appear however that this is not the case. I was in line at a local cafeteria where an elderly couple were seated just past the cash register. I overheard the lady say to her husband in a loud and disapproving tone in her voice: "he is wearing a skirt!". Both of them gave me a dirty look. I just walked past them to my table. I doubt any comment I could have made to them would have changed their mind. I am surprised that they did not complain to the manager about allowing men in "skirts" into the establishment.

    Re: Nice Skirt

Most of the comments I hear are from children to their parents. Today I was in Target and I heard a little boy say "look he's in a dress" as I turned I saw the dad trying to quiet him. If I have time I ask the parent if I may speak to their child, then I get down on their level and tell them that I am wearing a kilt and that it is traditional form of dress in Scotland but can be worn by anyone if they choose. This also helps enlighten the adults without them feeling that I am questioning their education.

    Good approach!!

In my own experience, many times people aren't trying to be rude, it's just that for some reason the word "kilt" is not readily accessible in their cerebral files and "skirt" is the next-best word that occurs to them.

It's nice when they do remember the word and use it in an approving way, though. Last time I was in a Target store (a few weeks ago) I was going down an escalator and a woman behind me, an attractive black lass, said "Sir, excuse me. . ."

And when I turned to look at her she gave me a big smile and said, "I think it's just AWESOME that you're wearing a kilt!!"

I'm killed in the war or hung during peace."

    Re: Nice Skirt

I've found in my travels that most often those saying "nice skirt" are are mostly people just poking a bit of fun (and usually only friends or colleagues). Not really intending to be rude or offensive, but just a little light hearted fun-making. This has, of course, only ever happened to me outside of Scotland, or the UK at large actually.

It's actually only ever happened to me once here in Canada with a stranger actually. And, in truth, that was in downtown Halifax after a pretty full "session" for both of us. After his eyes focussed, he did say "oh man, your in a kilt, never mind I thought [censored]"

But, fair enough really. It is something that's not the "norm" over here... I never take it too seriously.

I also am unaware of a Target being that big!

The only times I hear the skirt thing is from co-workers trying to yank my chain, or teenagers who are trying to yank my chain. A recent thread asked where I do I wear a kilt, and my answer was anywhere I want. But a better question is WHEN I will wear a kilt. And that answer is, when I'm in a decent mood. Sometimes I'm just a bit on the edgy side and am in no mood to hear any crap because nothing good is going to happen after a snippy comment from a jerk.
