Re: Nice Skirt
I do have to observe that many of the negative male reactions are jealousy as they see how many women are checking it out.
Seeing as how many if these men are barely beyond being cromags, they have no more intelligent reaction than to behave aggressively. First with verbal barbs, hoping they can escalate it further.
Putting them in their place with intelligent responses takes much of the wind out of their sails.

I completely agree. I would say l like 90% of American guys have seen Braveheart and NONE of them were thinking that Wallace looked girly in his blood stained "skirt"
I truly don't know how some could truly think the kilt looks feminine since anytime the kilt is depicted in the media, its always badass. I would have to say it's just seeing one in real life and not knowing how to compete with it that makes them try to belittle the man wearing it.
Again, know that we ladies appreciate it

Re: Nice Skirt
I think tone has a lot to do with how the comment is taken. Sometimes it's said because "kilt" isn't the first word that the brain accesses in it's files when presented with the sight of a well kilted man. In that case, I don't think it's intended as a put down or insult.
But there are times when it's leveled just as that, implying the wearer is somehow feminine because of the garment. But it's like many things, in that if you choose to do, say or dress differently than "the pack", you become the object of derision. How you handle that kind of thing is up to you.
I always admire when it's handled with sharp wit and humor but I know there are days it's best to just ignore the comments and continue to enjoy your day.
Lastly, I direct you to please read my sig if you're wondering how I feel about men in kilts.

Re: Nice Skirt
I think first and foremost that people don't mean to be rude, they just don't know exactly how to approach the kilted and ask questions, thus the reason for crass comments. I get way more-"that's awesome, that's hot, oh my God that's incredible!" than any rude skirt comments. And if there are brave men who approach me and try to be rude, I just look at them and remain quiet, the Kilt and the 1860's style beard do the rest.

When a coworker started yanking my chain, I was all prepared to say it's a KILT in resposnse to the usual SKIRT comment. I was taken aback when he called it a DRESS. So now I was explaining to him the difference between a skirt and a dress and saying it was afterall a type of skirt that I was wearing. He told me that he was just teasing me but added -if you ever wear it to work we're calling it a dress!
Occasional teasing is OK when it's original.

Re: Nice Skirt
What's wrong with men in skirts? ;-) I usually phase them with the response 'yes, and?' - they've never thought that far along the exchange, since that comment is the sum total of the wit. I might give them a nudge and say 'it's a kilt' though if they're looking confused, but cheeky but not funny people deserve The Unamused Stare of Death over the glasses. Works every time.
Oh and blokes checkout the kilts too...;-) Well I do, and others certainly do when I wear it...agreed the comments are always those who think they are so funny, but oddly ever since little school stating the bleedin' obvious wasn't actually classed as humour.
Story of friends of mine wearing full Highland (?) dress to a wedding...then getting bored at a reception and hoofing it over to a certain big London nightclub and getting a VERY good reaction ;-) Hope the wool didn't get too sweaty, LOL!
Maybe cos I've got the long beard, I'm used to such comments, I just tune them out...although interestingly I get more women wanting to play with my beard than men. Natch ;-)
(Typical response: it's softer than it looks!).

TurboKittie's response resonates with me. Last week an Eastern Indian walked by me with her little girl and said, "Nice skirt." I replied, "kilt", and she said, "I know. I was just kidding." I simply smiled at her. I was not offended. Perhaps, she couldn't think of the more specific word on short notice.
Another lady I know has two young girls (4 & 7) who (two times now) have pointed at me, laughed, and said something like, "You're wearing a skirt!". I replied, "Yes, it is like a skirt, but it is called a kilt and made for a man." Then, I proceeded to show off the pleats which seemed to interest them much more than the apron. I'm guessing that they will eventually ignore my "skirt". Time will tell.
I changed my signature. The old one was too ridiculous.
