Re: A Song of Ice and Fire... and Geeks

    Meghan,
I feel your pain. I just started grad school and I think longingly of the day that I can read a book just cause I want to, instead of because it is assigned.

me too Last night I literally read HALF of a chapter from my Irish Country Village novel that I've been working on since the end of summer and I felt guilty that it wasnt a chapter out of one of my assigned books I also read two chapters of The Hobbit over the weekend instead of assigned books too

Too many books and so little time. During the summer vacation I finished like 5 novels. Now it's taking me months to just get through one since I have to read one chapter at a time between homework

    Story of my life lol.

If you can balance everything out though, a good novel can be a nice distraction from school work.

    Haha indeed it can be.

At least the chapters of A Song of Ice and Fire typically end neatly; you can usually set the book down and get on with something else. Not every book is that considerate lol.

On an unrelated note, has anyone on here read Glen Cook's Black Company series? A friend of mine recommended them and I really enjoyed what I've read of it so far. A Song of Ice and Fire reminded me of it a bit, mostly in how dark and gritty both stories are.

speaking of Game of Thrones, whenever I go down in my basement to do my laundry, I still imagine that damn whitewalker girl in the first episode standing in the woods with her blue eyes. Thats an image scary enough to send you running back to the main level of the house.

Indeed it is. Basements are a bit creepy as it is. Or maybe its just that I didn't grow up with one.

Interestingly enough, the white walkers in that series remind me a lot of some baddies I encountered in a DnD campaign a few years ago, except in reverse. They could set things on fire with a touch. That got really old very quickly.

    lollll.

I never got into DnD but I'm sure if I liked video games, I would have really liked that. Video games and I don't mix because I get all stressed out whenever I have to fight something (really overactive imagination) and I can't control my character with those stupid knobs where you put your thumbs to make them turn and stuff. So I always end up getting killed in the first levels while my character wont stop looking at the sky or at the ground I just gave up video games all together. Even computer ones.

But, not even kidding, I would probably LARP if I had LARP friends. Why play a video game when you can BE the video game!

I'm terrible at video games lol. That's why I play DnD instead. I've never larped though. I draw the line there.

There's actually a Game of Thrones roleplaying game that looks fun.

Yeah, if I had LARP friends that clearly understood the boundaries between playing around in the woods and then living your real life in the real life world, then perhaps I'd LARP It's just hard to find people that are into the same things that I am without being TOO nerdy. There's nerdy and then there's just pathetically nerdy. I may fully enjoy classic geek things but I also know when to welcome myself into the real world.
