Don't know the company; others will shortly chime in. Personally, I'd keep looking for Walker before pulling the trigger.

I found this and they have WALKER tartan....for $130 for a hostess skirt.... that cant be right. Either that skirt is made out of plastic wrap where Walker tartan is drawn on with sharpies, or its a fishy seller...

cause thats WAY too good to be true.

Thoughts? Is this seller legit? Am I missing something? You guys know what buying kilts are like and I don't so please help me.

Ok, I figured it out. Walker is a special weave so it woudl cost me like $400

but seriously, $130 for an Irish American or Irish National or Heritage of Scotland or Scotland forever tartan hostess skirt? Is that still right? That seems so cheap!!
This online shop is almost exactly like heritageofscotland.com Their images are the same. I got a plain black Billie kilt form them (HoS). It was fine. It was like $25 but shipping was $35 ish. GAH! It also ran one size small. The quality was fine, like a little better than you'd find in Nordstroms Brass Plum dept. It definitely wasn't as nice as a custom kilt (like USA kilts, Scottish Tartan's Museum, or alt.kilt) The hem is very narrow and so are the buckles, but for a cute skirt, it works.

I think I will just go for custom made then. It would be almost $225 for the Co.Cork full length and I can get one for $250 custom made.

    Re: Tartan Choices

Marton Mills has 100% wool yardage in American Heritage. I got two yards of double width tartan for $80 (including shipping from England to Iowa). It's teflon coated for stain resistance.

If you go thru all the pull down tabs that you have have to do, to initiate an order, you will find that if you select the Walker tartan, it is available in two weights, 12oz and 16oz that are both custom weaves and add GBP250.00 to the cost. So it's not a bargain as it first seems.

Quite a few sites get you in with the intial price, then add huge amounts depending on what tartan you order

    Good luck with your hunting

yeah I came across that sad reality...but to be honest, I dont think I would want Walker tartan anyway. The person that had it designed did so in the 1980s and he's not even in my family. I feel like I would be wearing another Walker familys tartan...

I need to trace back my Walkers back further to get to an actual clan name or something. As for now, I will just stick with County tartans from Ireland since I know I can claim those as being personally significant whereas I would feel like a poser in Walker. I have my Irish roots traced to Co. Cork and Co. Londonderry so I can happily wear those and feel special

    Re: floor length womens kilts

    Right lads,

Im in another pickle. lol. I used to be such a spontaneous individual but as I get older, I get more and more indecisive and picky about stuff (especially expensive stuff)

So Ive always known my Irish family was from County Cork and just recently, after playing around with some geneology and some old files, I traced back another branch of my family to County Londonderry, Ireland. This really interested me because Co. Londonderry is in Northern Ireland and I never knew that a big chunk of my family tree came from Northern Ireland...not only did they come from there, but they have been there forever. I was able to get on file the occupation and everything from my most recent relative that lived there. I looked up their last name, Kane, and a simple google search said that the oldest records of Kanes ever are from Londonderry, Ireland which was awesome casue thats MY branch. Thats where they lived apparently for so many generations and my family isnt terribly far removed from them now. If they were so far away back in my tree, perhaps I wouldnt feel such a pull to have a Derry tartan but I have just as much claim to a Derry tartan as I do for a Cork one now. Same distance in generations (great-great grandparents).

Now I sort of want my first tartan skirt to be in Londonderry tartan instead of Cork. I feel a stronger pull towards Derry than Cork but part of me worries about the stigma that Nor. Ireland gets from Republic of Ireland. I come from a hugely Irish Catholic family and even my Nor. Irish Derry family was Catholic. I just don't know what I want to represent....should I represent Cork or should I represent a part of the country where, more than likely, my Catholic family was victim of a lot of oppression. Bloody Sunday even happened right in Derry.

Part of me has a soft spot for people who have fought for stuff or been victims of oppression which is why I would want to show pride for Derry...but part of me also doesnt want anyone to look down their nose at the fact that its a Northern Ireland county. I wouldnt have that problem with Cork.

    What do you think?

ps- It would help if one of the tartans was butt ugly but unfortunatey, they are both really pretty. I think I am drawn to the autumny colors of Londonderry but I also love the colors in Cork. Votes?

I say this with the greatest of respect and in the full knowledge that we are treading on very thin ice. BUT:

Whatever the various rights and wrongs of Irish history of which no side, or, point of view comes up smelling of roses, however, there are many, today, in that "blighted island", the vast majority probably, who are trying their damnedest to get along together and in spite of everything, they are all doing pretty well. So can I respectfully ask those outwith the UK and Eire to stop perpetuating this divide thing ,that has cursed good people for centuries. If they can stop this vicious circle AT HOME and on the whole they have, in spite of all the day to day imperfections, why do others need to carry on this divide thing in your country that is thousands of miles from where it is all happening? Stop it and stop it now! Please!

Sorry all, but it has to be said

^ I meant no disrespect and I also don't really think my post deserved the beat-down as nothing that I said in there was controversial nor offensive. I didn't even bring politics into it. All I simply said was that my family probably suffered when they lived there and that might sway me to want to wait to buy that tartan until I knew more about it. I didn't say anything that might have been taken offensively. I dont support any sort of divide. I have always thought of the entire island as Ireland and all who live there as Irish people. North or South, whatever, they are still Irish. I brought it up because I was weighing which tartan I would want to buy first.

I understand that perhaps this is an old and annoying topic on the board and I apologize for contributing to peoples annoyances. However, I dont feel like my post deserved the beat down that it got.

Politics is a 'no go' area for this forum, and you have picked a real hot potato subject. However, you seem to be answering the question yourself.

You feel drawn to the Derry side of your inheritance, and the tartan, so I would say go for it - but wear it out of regard for the people who made up your family rather than what you believe anyone else might think, or what anyone has done for that matter.

I would say check carefully first though.

I used to know someone who declared themselves to be descended from a famous rebel, the family had been in exile for decades for fear of reprisal, who sang the songs and lamented the land - only to discover that the red hair was nothing to do with Ireland, it was inherited from a East coast herring packer with a Scandinavian father who had adopted the English surname sounding closest to her foreign one.
