No, I haven't read those; I don't often venture off into fiction novels.
Maybe "parallel" isn't quite the right word. It's more like Martin took little pieces of myth and history, then mixed, expanded, and exaggerated them into a whole different world. That's why I was looking at the mythologies and folklore of the characters; those also have that same feel to them.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…
