It would also make the holes have horizontal orientation and not vertical as in the original image.
Now that's good. Might also be a 'B' or merely descoration although initials are more likely. Here's a higher res image.

I'm really new at this 'Name the tartan' stuff, but I'll take a crack at it (most likely wrong)
To my inexperienced eye, it looks like it might be one of the 'Withered' or ancient MacPerson tartans.
Scotland is only 1/5 the size of Montana, but Scotland has over 3,000 castles and Montana has none.

This is nothing about 'name that tartan' but rather what can one determine from a picture about a piece of old cloth. A case of teasing out the clues. Name or no, that's irrelevant.

I don't really see the similarity. More gordon of Abergeldy to my mind with some Royal Stewart thrown in.

The depth of colours and shades is wonderful. It's beautiful. Another fascinating shade of Green. I wonder if it may be identified and the region then revealed. I also wonder if this is cochineal red. Might be early 19th cent?

Any red pre-alaline dyes is likely to be from a cochineal dye - and so.....?

Might indeed be early C19th - and so.....?

So this is a costly cloth. There is a fair deal of Red in the weave.

Smells like a fillabeg from here. I reckon this to be 25" wide and this is another large sett, 13" or so. At the left end of the picture in post 14, we can see about two inches missing from the cloth. That would be above the belt.

Those holes really are intriguing. I wonder if it is a fastening scar, but that's at the edge not the waistline.

Yes and no. Expense is a relative term and it all depends on the date of the cloth.

Look again at #14. There's more to see.

Don't worry, many of us are still total dopes in this area.

That left edge looks ready to join to its mirror. This would have done just like last month's example but maybe it was never done. Maybe it was and this one has bee taken apart. Either that or that left edge by the 'monogram' is expertly hemmed.

Looks like a pale Blue beside the red stripe actually. That's 6 colours then.
