Re: fly plaid and military uniform (mea culpa)
having put my foot partially in my mouth I decided to take a look at the US military uniform regs. My comment about my rack being to wide to fit my lapel is true. To be fair however I noted that the US Mess Dress Uniform jacket have lapels which are wider than my Argyll/Braemer and will easily accommodate a 4 wide medal rack. Still, looks like I will have to make a necessary adjustment and put them over the pocket. I doubt anyone at the Ball will call me out on it.

Sorry if I made it seem you were putting your foot in your mouth -- more of a point of information, to borrow from my Model UN days.
As I mentioned, in British custom, minis do hang over the edge of the lapel. Note this primer from the Hereditary Society USA's web site:
http://www.hereditary.us/gent.htm
It follows British Commonwealth protocol fairly close.

Ah - that explains the American cartoon character with the medals extending on a cantilevered rack - it was emphasised as not just over the top but plain wrong as in 'this guy is a phony' - and in the country of origin it was understood by those in on the joke.

Thank you. I noted that the single rack on the Black Tie dinner jacket was pinned ABOVE the left slash breast pocket. I have two personal awards (CIB and jump wings) which are always work above racks of ribbons and decorations. If I attach the miniature metal single row as shown my two will crawl up almost to me shoulder.
I guess I'm trying to accomodate both military and civilian attire. in a way that doesn't appear a hodge-poge of just pinning stuff to my jacket.

Re: fly plaid and military uniform
Here's a good example, albiet a photo of mess dress, in this case the No. 5B mess dress of the RAF:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...Mess_Dress.jpg
Air Chief Marshall Sir Glen Torpy GCB, CBE, DSO, ADC, (retired).
Note the mess dress version of RAF wings worn above the row of medals on the left lapel.
It is my understanding that 5B may be worn with kilts in the RAF or Grey Douglas tartan by Scottish-based RAF units. If I'm wrong, hopefully someone will correct me.
