    Re: Kilt-making "porn"

Wow! Nice video. I never dreamed my sub woofer worked so well. I can't stop shaking.

Now, I know how to sew a kilt. I didn't know it was so easy.

A kilt maker I know said she had to make a kilt in 8 hours in order to graduate, but I suspect it was under constraints like those described by Anne the Pleater. I'll ask her next time I see her.
I changed my signature. The old one was too ridiculous.

    Different strokes
Different strokes indeed. I could be wrong, but I seem to recall Barb Tewksbury saying a while ago that there would have been instructions in "The Art of Kiltmaking" for using pins - as she does - but her co-author Elsie Stuehmeyer was ardently opposed their use. Can't find the post right now, though - so I could be in error.

Exactly, there are lots of different ways to make a kilt, and the use of pins, or indeed the lack of pins, doesn't neccesarily make a kilt maker better or worse.
I use a few pins when am sewing a pleat, to hold it in place, but I don't pin the whole kilt before I start.

I confess to thinking that is odd to publish a book saying don't pin, but in practise, use them.It would be a lot more honest to say that some makers do and some don't, and certainly for learner kiltmakers some pinning really does make it easier. I've looked at dozens of pictures of traditional kiltmakers and all of them use some pins.
But the point remains, pin if you want to, you don't have to, and by using them you are not a lesser maker.

I don't recall the book ever saying not to use them - it just shows the techniques to make one without them.

But the point remains that if you do use pin to make kilts, it seems strange not to say so

And I'll agree to that, but that's where having a co-author is a tricky thing.

    Re: Kilt-making "porn"

i was trying to find the old film footage of a kilt being made , and just found it on the Pathe site Kiltmaker in 1952, and the girl who is gathering the pleats is using pins to hold the pleats in place!
It's a wonderful short film, it's been mentioned many time before but always worth a revisit - and there are some other good short films in the index as well

What a nice wee fillum (and the recent one was fascinating too).
Makes you realise what good value kilts are compared to a modern man's suit.

The one thing that perplexed me was that it said that a kilt could be made in 8 hours, most kiltmakers on here suggest anything from 20 -25 hours is a reasonable time for a traditional kilt, I've no idea how they could do it in a third of that time!
I agree! My first kilt that I made took me about 3 weeks... that was with working just a few hours a day, and sometimes not getting to work on it at all. It was a very interesting video though. better than some on Youtube that had to do with making kilts.

And about using pins, I used them when I thought I needed them (especially on the pleats). I guess there is really no right or wrong way to use them. It's just if you feel you need them, use them
    kilted in Brooklet :)
