Talking Re: No mention of kilt in dress code, Edinburgh

Interestingly, when I was a doorman at a Gentleman's Club (topless joint) back in the 80's, we had basically the same guidelines....

I think you might find that jacket and tie is required in the clubhouse - shorts etc. are for when playing golf. It is one of the snootiest golf clubs in Edinburgh but I see no reason why you shouldn't wear highlandwear at a private function in the clubhouse. It is really the organisers you should be referring to not the golf club.

Re: No mention of kilt in dress code, Edinburgh

Seems to be different around here... I pipe at golf courses all the time, and they usually have a sign posted at the door with the dress code, which is always something short and simple such as "no collarless shirts, no shorts".

Everyone wears golf shirts and slacks.

As an aside, once I was piping at a golf course and I happened to look over and see a group of what appeared to be Japanese tourists golfing. They kept shooting dirty looks my way, obviously annoyed with having to golf with the noise of the bagpipes going on. I felt like going over there and yelling IT'S A SCOTTISH GAME, DON'T YOU GET IT?

One thing i've learned after living in Japan for a few years is that they're very serious about their golf. The idea of anyone being annoyed or offended at the sound of bagpipes astounds me to no end though.

A jacket and tie would definitely be mandatory in the dining room of a more conservative, old-school club, both here and in Scotland. However, I can't imagine the club hosting a clan gathering without decreeing that kilts are acceptable. I would contact the clan's event planners.

In my experience it's better to ask for forgiveness than beg for permission. I would just go ahead and wear a kilt to the event see what happens. Maybe bring a spare pair of pants in case they really have a problem with it. In my opinion though 'clan gathering' and 'kilt' are synonomous and it would go without saying that it would be acceptable.

We have a local club here, and of course there is no mention of the kilt. But they do state that private function or not everyone will follow the rules or be denied entry, and that it is the responsibility of the Host to insure their guests follow the rules (dress included).

I've played there but never in a kilt, so when a friend my mine planned to get married there, he sent a copy of the code of conduct out with the invitations. With no mention of the kilt, I decided to call and ask. They were thrilled to have a kilt on the grounds.. golfing or otherwise. They said they kilt's were not mentioned, due for the most part because they were uncommon and created the written rules as a more general guide.

So I can't say if your Edinburgh club is the same... but never take no from someone who cannot tell you yes... give them a call and get the full story.
