    Re: 2011 Rugby World Cup!

New Zealand have the Haka with the aim of intimidating their opponents. Has anyone got the video which advertises Scotch Whisky with New Zealand intimidating their Scottish Opponents who are all wearing kilts. After New Zealand finish their routine then its the Scots turn. If you have seen this clip you will know how funny it is and if you haven't seen it, I do not want to waste your enjoyment telling you about it.
Was it someone on X-marks who posted it some time ago?

Down in Invercargal too I see. There use to be if not still more pipe bands perhead of population here in NZ than in Scotland.

If it was a group doing a haka now and then during the match they wouldn't dare ban that.

I wouldn't be supprised if they ban the stadium wave next.

That's what really surprised me too. Invercargill and Dunedin are hotbeds of original Scots settlers, Old Hokinui whisky was illegally distilled in the area by MacRaes and I know there are pipe bands all over that area of the South Island.

Personally I would really appreciate hearing the lament on the pipes when the All Blacks defeat Scotland.

Yes I sometimes think that many here in NZ forget that kilts, bagpipes, highland games etc are just as much as part of our NZ culture as drinking tea etc.

I see that theres now a face book page protesting the ban.

A good friend of ours is involved in clan MacRae here in NZ, I think she is either the commissioner or secretary or the like. Or at least was.

    Re: 2011 Rugby World Cup!

Well, it's finally all over. I watched just about every game of the tournament -- well worth the money I paid for the HD channel subscriptions on my satellite dish...

And what a final it was!!! I was at the edge of my seat till the final minutes! I couldn't believe how close it was. In spite of the outcome, I was still proud to wear my France jersey! Whenever France decides to show up for a game, they are a force to be reckoned with. I also LOVED how the French stood up to the All Balcks' haka!!! That was first rate!

At the same time, congrats to the kiwis who finally got satisfaction again after 24 years. But for the French who have come so close several times and have yet to see the day, I say ALLEZ LES BLEUS! May your time come soon...

I watched the game and was riveted. I didn't know *** was going on... I really don't understand rugby, but enjoy watching it.. perhaps because of the confusion, I don't know, but I was caught up in it as always. Cool game.

Mickey, if you understand football (NFL/CFL) you'll catch onto rugby mighty quick. There are a fair few similarities.

The KEY difference (IMO) between football and rugby is that in rugby, the ball touching the ground or a player being tackled with the ball does NOT result in a dead ball. The team that has possession is free to continue to recycle the ball by passing it to a teammate laterally (there is no forward passing allowed in rugby) or move the ball to another part of the field by kicking it.

football: touchdown = 6 pts, conversion kick = 1 pt, field goal = 3 pts
rugby: try (almost the same as a touchdown) = 5 pts, conversion kick = 2 pts, drop goal = 3 pts.

Line-outs (when the ball goes out the side) is taken in a way that's similar to soccer. Scrums occur when certain rules are broken. The team with the advantage is the side that feeds the ball into the scrum. The object is to pass the ball through the center of the scrum to the back where it can be picked up by a player and put into play.

Those are the bare, bare bones basics... But being a football fan myself, I highly encourage other football fans to give rugby a try! You'll be very pleasantly surprised. It has all the physicality as football but without all the consistent stop-go restarts from down to down.

(Which is the reason why I also don't care for baseball... I like games where there is constant, non-stop action... Like hockey. I don't like games where there is lots of waiting and standing around for stuff to happen).
