And if you think about it, having about 20 ft of wool around your waist is a whole lot warmer than a pair of jeans.

Is there anything more frigin than jeans in winter! I remember just walking from the mall to a car and then having to sit in a car...those frozen jeans are so cold and stiff - horrible winter clothing.

I will be attempting to wear the kilt all winter! (without pants)

I sewed that shirt by hand, without a pattern, basing it off of a composite of textile finds from Birka, Sweden... just finished it a few days ago, in fact.

And I'm certainly no tailor, either. If I can do it, you can (and your friend can, in their sleep). PM me, and I can tell you exactly how to do it, if you'd like.

Sign me up for the modern, knee-length tunic or leine with hose etc fashion. Guess you could also get that Roman look with leg wraps, too.

I don't mean to be a jerk, but I was just thinking about this from another post in another thread. A traditional kilt does not have twenty feet of wool around the waist because the fell is cut away, and all the extra wool insulation is below the fell. However the jacket or sweater would probably cover most of that. Belted plaids are more like twelve feet of wool and used more as an overcoat with the leine underneath from what I have been told by the experts of the forum.

Make a modern belted plaid.

Ok, I have on one of my tunics. It's made from a fairly heavy beige and gray cloth that has a checkered texture (a little like some long johns, but much larger textures; kind of waffle-like). Without a belt it ends below my knees. There is a slit or vent on the left and right side, and the neck opening is held closed with an antique looking metal button on either side and a cord wrapped around them. There is a tiny bit of a decorative trim for a collar, and the sleeves are three quarter length. Best worn with trousers of some sort because of the side vents. For some reason it reminds me of something a pirate might wear. Arg...

My other tunic is shorter, made from lighter weight dark gray cotton and has full length sleeves. The sleeves are very wide at the opening and the end is tied in a knot. the bottom of the tunic is also tapered out very widely. It works best with a belt, and is to be worn with trousers of some sort. Got that from someone in the SCA.

* Edit: I put on the SCA tunic, and it comes down to the top of my knees. It might be wearable with just hose, but would be a little better if it had some extra length to take up under the belt. It looks like it was made by folding a length of fabric in half, then making seams along a diagonal line from the shoulder area to the corners of the fabric. This makes the flare of the sleeve openings and the bottom huge. *

I need to make one that is about mid-calf-length that can be belted up to knee-length and worn with just hose. I might even make it flair out like the SCA tunic, so I can fold in a few large, messy pleats around the back to be held by the belt.
