Given that you could also sidestep altogether the issue of 'dishonouring' the USMC uniform as was raised earlier in the thread.

The Kenmore doublet look is what I'm going for without spending more for the doublet than I did for my kilt especially since I'm not blessed with a large surplus of cash right now. I've searched on line and been unable to find Kenmore doublets any ideas where I should look?

If he was looking to spend almost $500 on a jacket, he probably would not be looking in military surplus stores.

Fist off, let me apologize to any Marines who felt that I was "disrespecting" their uniform, that was not my intention. I was trying to get advice on a project that has been rattling around in my head for at least two years now since I first saw pictures of Sheriffmuir, Montrose and Kenmore doublets and how to make one out of something readily available.

As a point of reference gentlemen, my good wool "tank" set me back almost $600 in 2002.

As I served in the Army, maybe I should be looking at an officer's dress blue jacket to convert into a Balmoral doublet which looks really nice. Also as a Security Guard and former Reserve Police Officer a LEO jacket cut to wear with a kilt is an idea I had not thought of. I do have a navy blue Ike jacket that I wear with my uniform for police funerals (if I personally knew the officer) and other formal functions.

In searching the internet for Kenmore doublets, I did come accross Great Highland Wear. Does anyone know anything about this vendor? Product quallity, customer service, value for the price, etc.? They do have a Kenmore doublet in my size for around $150. Since I don't get invited to too many white tie events, if any and from what I've read here on the forum that seems to be level of formality the doblets are designed for, that might be something to look into what do you think?

Looking at their web site they are clearly selling items that originate from Pakistan and they state their items are shipped via Dubai. I seem to recall a post about them in this forum a few weeks ago

Similar jackets from the same Pakistan source that I see in Edinburgh shops do not actually appear to be poor quality so if I were in your shoes I would probably be tempted to just go for it. It would beat the amount of work (and money) you would put into altering a uniform jacket. There is always a risk buying from an unknown supplier but you can minimise the risk by paying by credit card or paypal, if available

I just used the search feature to find any threads regarding Great Highland Wear and found one from a while back with nothing but negative comments abot the company. "Pay us another 60% and we will send you the items you already paid full price for two years ago." Are you high or do you just think I'm stupid? I did find a link to Geofrey Music in the same provence as GHW. They have a drummer's tunic that might work (the one pictured on their website is white with gold trim and shoulder shells which I could take off, they do come in other colors though including black). They don't say how much it will cost though.

The dress blue jacket is a form-fitting garment. That is to say that they are tailored to fit quite close. They're made to fit Marines, and Marines are quite trim. At least until they retire, in my case.

What this means to Mr. Lancer1562 and the rest of us is that you should be in fairly good shape if you expect to fine a Marine jacket suitable for alteration. I have a couple dress blues jackets that looked great on me when I was on active duty; I'm not fitting back into them anytime soon.

Just food for thought. A healthy Celt might not fit into the jacket.

That's a very good point. And if one were to convert it into a Sherrifmuir-doublet-type jacket, you'd have to account for space to fit a waistcoat beneath.

I with my 38" chest and 31" waist could quite pull it off; however I've no desire for a USMC jacket conversion at the moment.

True, as I recall from when i was active, they should be tailored so that they will only pull one inch from your chest. That is very close! Keep in mind, all that is worn under them is a white t shirt, there is certainly no room for anything else. I wish I still fit my dress blues!
