Whatever has happened to manners

I suppose I chose a bad example, but it was not a matter of him belonging to a different religion, or of manners evolving, it was simply a matter of him thinking that manners were for other people, not something he had to be concerned about.

editted to add; Joel posted while I was thinking, but I agree with him. Like at sporting events when we stand for each other's national anthems.There are people that don't even do that anymore.

I'd say personally I feel like traditions should be respected. My brother likes to wear a fedora, and despite growing up in the Christian church there are times he'd rather not take it off when he goes in the church. He'll take it off for prayer, but he'd prefer to wear it in the church building. But he knows it bothers others around him, so he takes it off. But when I visited a synagogue, I wore a kippa during the service because it was their tradition.

Which really just boils down to having good manners.

I had actually gone outside and was working on something when it popped into my mind "did I misspell that?"

It can be difficult combing through posts before it's too late.

Going back to the post I was responding to, when I was a little kid, the time one begins learning manners, many of the people in my life would not have taken these things into consideration before acting or reacting. I can only speak for my own situation, of course; other people's traditions might not have been respected.

I was not at all impressed with some of the people coming around 'trick or treating' tonight.

Some of them just grabbed and ran off without a please or a thankyou, and the parents didn't say a word either to them or to me.

Others were very polite, or very shy and stood clutching their bag smiling uncertainly.

One couldn't speak because he had his mouth full, just nodded happily.

I don't expect children coming to a strange house to respond eloquently - but the parents could do better. This is, after all a new custom here in the UK and after the second lot of grabbers the lights were switched off. Next year I might take some treats round earlier in the day to the houses on my street with polite families and not turn the lights on at all.

I'm glad I had better luck with the goblins and gremlins tonight than you did, Anne. I think of the whole lot that came around, only one or two were the grab and run type. Most said trick or treat, and a few that were kinda afraid to walk up to a 6ft tall Martian and say anything.

I understand. I go back and look at my posts sometimes, and see all kinds of problems, then have to scramble to edit.

A few years ago, a group of boys in their early teens did a grab and run at my house, except for the very last on in the group, who said, "Thank you." As he started to walk away, I called him back, and he looked like I must have thought he did something wrong. His face lit up when I threw a handful of candy into his bag and told him that it was for being the only one who said thank you.
