To an extent that is true, but there is also a flip side. If an outsider "intrudes" in their setting, they can sometimes be just as judgemental because they are the authority figures. The "nerds" may be outcasts from the "cool" world, but they then create their own world and turn everyone else into outsiders.
Not always, of course, but it does seem to be human nature to desire to be part of a group and then becomes a mark of status when you can exclude others. You know, treating someone as an idiot because they don't know the name of Green Lantern's sidekick's third cousin's ex-wife's grandfather's drill sergeant (I think it was Jack )

As a Trekkie, Steampunk wannabe, Rennie, and reenactor with the Renaissance Scots Living History Association, I would have to say... YES!! We are indeed ahead of the population at large.

...and even if Kilties, Rennies, Trekkies, Steampunkers and Reenactors (oh, and Baker Street Irregulars, possibly), are not "more spiritually advanced" than much of the "normal" population...
...they are arguably more amusing (and sometimes, pick one or all, more fun, stimulating, educational, interesting) to be in company of.

No... I'm a very boring person.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…
Yes, I have squirrels in my brain…
